Pair of earthquakes rattle parts of Oklahoma
BLANCHARD, Okla. (AP) – Two earthquakes have shaken parts of north and south central Oklahoma.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 3.2 quake Saturday morning about 9 miles (15 kilometers) south of Blanchard. Earlier Saturday, the survey says a magnitude 2.6 temblor rattled about 15 miles (25 kilometers) east of Cherokee.
No damage or injuries were immediately reported.
Geologists say damage isn’t likely in quakes below magnitude 4.0. Earthquakes of magnitudes 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest that are felt by humans.
Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years, with many linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and natural gas production operations.
State regulators have directed oil and gas producers to close some disposal wells or reduce the volume of fluids they inject in others.
