James “Jim” Edwin Stone – Veteran

(October 8, 1949 – June 3, 2017)

James Edwin “Jim” Stone formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Saturday morning, June 3, 2017, at his home northwest of Ponca City at the age of 67 years.

Jim Stone was born on October 8, 1949, in Cedar Vale, Kansas, to William Nathan and Ellen Belle (Byrum) Stone. He grew up in Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1967. Following his education he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps serving in the Vietnam War where he was twice awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery. He married Lonette Marie “Lonnie” Norlin on June 2, 1972, in Blackwell and they made Blackwell their home. In 1975 he began his career as a U. S. Post Office mail carrier, for the Blackwell Post Office. He retired in 2006 after thirty-one years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he was a third degree in the Knight of Columbus. He also held membership in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lonnie Stone of Ponca City; a daughter, Jamie Sawyer and husband Jeff of Ponca City; a son, Jason Stone and wife Kara of Blackwell; four sisters, Caroline Contreras of Wichita, Kansas, Loma Smart and husband Jerry of Sedan, Kansas, Opal Evert and husband Les of Kiowa, Oklahoma, and Ruth Lane and husband Jim of Sedan, Kansas; five brothers, William “Bill” Stone and wife Cookie of Blackwell, Don Stone of Cedar Vale, Kansas, Tim and Kim Stone of Cedar Vale, Kansas, Terry Stone and wife Wanda of Blackwell, and Dale Stone and wife Sherry of Cedar Vale, Kansas; five grandchildren, Grace and Emma Sawyer, Jacob, Nathan and Kenneth Wiggins; two great grandchildren, Lydia Wiggins and Autumn Murphy; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two great grandchildren, Damien and Krystal Wiggins.

A prayer service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 6th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 7th in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Blackwell with Father Ben Lwin officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the United States Armed Services.

Casketbearers will be Jason Stone, Bill Stone, Don Stone, Tim Stone, Terry Stone and Dale Stone. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Jeff Sawyer, Scott O’Hair, Dean Morris, Bill Mauntel, Kenneth Wiggins and Steve Yunker.
