J. L. Murray

(March 10, 1936 – May 24, 2017)

J L Murray of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday evening, May 24, 2017, in the Willow Haven Nursing Home in Tonkawa at the age of 81 years.

J L Murray was born on March 10, 1936, in Blackwell to James Robert and Gladys May (Frazee) Murray. He grew up in Blackwell and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1954. Following his education he began working for the Turvey Meat Packing Company in Blackwell. He later attended Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee where he studied and received a degree in accounting. In 1959 he moved to Wichita, Kansas, and began working as a cost accountant for Boeing Aircraft. He married Carmen Kay Compton on August 2, 1964, in Blackwell and they settled in Wichita before moving to Derby in 1967 where he continued to work at Boeing. He later became manager of the Kerr-McGee Service Station in Derby. In 2002 they moved to Blackwell to make their home. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He also loved to research family genealogy.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen Murray of Blackwell; a son, Phil Murray and wife Tammie of Haysville, Kansas; three grandchildren, Lindsay Nichols and husband Shane of Udall, Kansas, Ben Murray of Wichita, Kansas, and Carson Murray of Haysville, Kansas; a great granddaughter, Aspyn; an aunt, Dorothy Marrs of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; three nephews; five nieces; and several cousins and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James J. Murray; and a sister, Imogene Hull.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 27th in the Blackwell Cemetery with James W. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his honor with the Diabetes Association in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
