Heavy storms cause localized flooding

Several areas of Ponca City experienced localized flooding Thursday after a severe thunderstorm moved through the region.

This photo by Deana Bryan shows water flowing over a bridge on Highland Avenue, west of Waverly Street Thursday afternoon. Streets, parking lots and residential yards also were flooded all over Ponca City. Intense lightning and wind gusts of up to  29 mph were recorded. The Ponca City Regional Airport reported 32.1 mm — or 1.3 inches — of rain between noon and 9 p.m. Thursday.

Drivers are reminded to avoid driving into water covering roadways. Not only is there  the risk of flooding vehicles and becoming stranded, but roadways can crumble and wash away quickly, creating hazards that could prove fatal.
