The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority voted on Tuesday to increase the speed limit on portions of rural turnpikes in Oklahoma from 75 mph to 80 mph. The vote ended up passing
Turnpikes that will experience speed limit changes include the Turner Turnpike between Bristow and Sapulpa, the Muskogee Turnpike between Muskogee and Tulsa, the Cherokee Turnpike at Locust Grove, Indian Nation Turnpike between State Highway 9 and Interstate 40, the Norman Spur of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike and the new Kickapoo Turnpike in eastern Oklahoma City between the Turner Turnpike and I-40 once it opens later this year.
The nearby Cimarron Turnpike, connecting Interstate 35 in northern Oklahoma to Tulsa, looks to have no upcoming changes of speed limit which will remain at 75 mph.
Until the new 80 mph signs are in place, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol will enforce the current posted speed limit. No urban areas such as the John Kilpatrick or Creek turnpikes were considered this round.
