Animal Control euthanizes fewer animals in 2016

Ponca City Police Chief Don Bohon, in his 2016 annual report on Ponca City Animal Control, reports more animals were handled in 2016 than in 2015, fewer animals were euthanized and more animals were released.

For the year, Animal Control handled 1,320 animals, including 754 dogs and 566 dogs.

Of the  animals 754 released, nearly 80 percent (598 animals) were dogs, while 156 (20.7 percent) were cats.

Of the 566 animals euthanized, 156 (27.6 percent) were dogs, while 410 (72.4 percent) were cats.

Bohon said 20.7 percent of the dogs handled were euthanized compared to 79.3 percent released, while 72.4 percent of the cats handled were euthanized, compared to 27.6 percent released.

In addition, Animal Control picked up 790 dead animals in 2016, wrote 222 citations and served five vicious dog papers. There were 1,914 sign ins recorded at Animal Control.
