Ex-Tulsa officer’s second murder trial for daughter’s boyfriend also ends in mistrial
TULSA, Okla. (AP) – The second murder trial of a former Tulsa police officer has ended just as the first did – in mistrial.
Mistrial was declared early Saturday in the trial of 56-year-old Shannon Kepler for the 2014 death of his daughter’s boyfriend when jurors said they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict after about eight hours of deliberation.
Kepler testified he shot 19-year-old Jeremey Lake in self-defense after seeing Lake with a gun, however police testified no gun was found on or near Lake.
Jurors reported about 2:30 a.m. that they were unable to break the deadlock that was earlier reported at 10-2 in favor of a conviction.
Kepler’s first trial ended with a jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction. He was convicted on two related counts of reckless conduct with a firearm.
