Students practice math skills with golf

Great things are happening in Ponca City Public Schools with the Engage2Learn framework.   Students in Cortney Sheid’s sixth grade math class recently learned about adding and subtracting negative and positive integers in a real-world application.

Sheid ‘hooked’ her students into the project by having Rod Alexander, Director of Golf at Wentz Memorial Golf Course, come and share about the game of golf and how players score themselves.

Students spent the next few weeks learning in a variety of ways about working with integers.   As a culmination to their learning and to get a chance to practice their skills, students collaborated with their team members to create their own one-of-a-kind hole of golf including water and sand hazards, unique surroundings, and designated par.

Students and staff used the student-created course to play a round of golf with miniature golf clubs and a bead as the golf ball, while practicing their mastered math skills by keeping their score on each hole.
