The Ponca City Public Schools recognize the need to further educate and protect our students and staff in regards to safety and health. The International and National concerns with the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is ramping up and we must be prepared.
According to the Oklahoma State Health Department, there are no confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in Oklahoma at this time, but they will activate their Incident Command System and stand ready with a multitude of statewide and national partners to treat and minimize further spread.
Our local Kay County Health Department, medical and emergency medical partners, emergency management, and other community partners are in regular communication regarding the COVID-19 situation updates, planning measures and response needs.
The Ponca City Public School District regularly communicates with their local and state medical professionals and emergency response partners. In the event a health crisis occurs here in our community, we will be ready to respond.
The Ponca City Public Schools, with the assistance of the CDC, State Government and National resources, are putting together prevention methods within our school district. Our staff is receiving prevention recommendations for themselves as well as information to educate students. Our Maintenance Department is providing additional cleaning and disinfecting protocols at each site, and they will assist teachers with supplies as needed. The cleaning chemicals we use in the district are effective to fight a host of many viruses including the Coronavirus.
Our district Nurses are educating our students and providing guidance for staff. Good hygiene and hand washing techniques, just as we do for the common cold and flu, that will stop the spread of germs. They are as follows:

- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.
- Put your tissue in a trash can.
- No tissue? Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
WASH YOUR HANDS
Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 10-15 seconds OR use a hand sanitizer after:
- Coughing or sneezing
- Using the bathroom
- Caring for a sick person
- Handling garbage, animals, and animal waste
