Have you ever wondered how Ponca City came to be known as Ponca City?  The answer will be presented from 10 to 11 a.m.  Saturday, Nov. 19, at Marland’s Grand Home.

The Grand Home, located at 1000 East Grand Avenue, will present a “Listen and Learn” lecture series on the history of the Ponca Tribe for Native American Heritage Month.

Marland’s Grand Home will be hosting several “Listen and Learn” lecture series throughout the coming year in order to inform the public and celebrate our local heritage and diversity.

Ponca tribal native Chris LittleCook will give an oral presentation Nov. 19 on the history of the tribe, from the late 1800s through their movement to northern Oklahoma from their homelands in Nebraska. The presentation will include the tribe’s fascinating customs and the meaning of their beautiful Hethuska Society dancing.

LittleCook is the Title Seven Director for Ponca City Public Schools and a member of Ponca Tribe’s Hethuska Warrior Society.  LittleCook and his wife Mindy also serve on the Friends of Marland’s Grand Home Board of Directors.

Following the presentation, the renovated tribal exhibits and new Ponca exhibits will be unveiled.  Refreshments will be served. There is no cost for the morning’s presentation.

Please contact Marland’s Grand Home at 767-0427 by Nov. 15 to guarantee seating.
