Obituary for Patricia Hinton

Patricia Helen Hinton

(October 30, 1926 – August 30, 2016)

Patricia Head Hinton, 89, St. Joseph, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at a local healthcare facility. She was supported by her loving children, devoted caregivers and compassionate hospital staff.

While a talented artist, amateur architect, gourmet cook, and prolific gardener, she took the most pride and had an undying passion as a devoted daughter, loving wife and caring mother and grandmother.

She was born October 30, 1926 to Irvin and Lela Head in Wichita, KS. On September 25,1954, she married Warren S. Hinton and they moved to St. Joseph where he served as the Administrator of Methodist Hospital and Medical Center for nearly 30 years. They raised two children, Heidi, St. Joseph, and Walter, Lafayette, Colorado. In 1981, they moved to their farm near Amity, Missouri where she became involved at Amity United Methodist Church and other local organizations.

She was graduated from Wichita East High School in 1944. Pat then attended and is a graduate of Christian College in Columbia, Missouri and Friends University in Wichita, Kansas earning her Bachelor of Arts in 1948. During World War II, she was a detail illustrator for Boeing doing “to scale” drawings of repair parts for planes. After graduation, she also worked as a guest editor of Mademoiselle magazine, but returned to Wichita after a brief time in New York City. City life was not her style.

Pat had many passions in life. Her artistic talents included magazine design, illustration, china painting, decorative tiles and landscapes of rural Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. She and Warren were always dreaming up building projects at home or her beloved “Headquarters” in Crested Butte, Colorado. She would develop the architectural plans while Warren handled the construction details. They had a huge garden on their farm near Amity, Missouri and she loved to convert that bounty into sumptuous meals for her family and friends to enjoy.

While living in St. Joseph, she volunteered at Eugene Field School leading the “Great Books” discussions with students. She also was an active member of the Flower Society and served on the board of the YWCA. After moving to Dekalb County following Warren’s retirement, she served on the Boards of Northwest Missouri Area Agency on Aging and the DeKalb County Senior Center. She was also very active in many roles at Amity United Methodist Church, including publishing a book of illustrations composed from church bulletins that she had designed over many years. The proceeds were donated to help renovate the 100 year old structure. She loved living in a rural setting and treasured her many friends in the area.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren; and brother, Don. Survivors include: daughter, Heidi (David) Hornaday; son, Walter (Christina) Hinton; grandchildren, John Hornaday, Julia Hornaday, Tyler Hinton, Alexandra Hinton and Elizabeth Hinton; great grandchild, Emery Hornaday.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2016 at Turner Family Funeral Home, Maysville, Missouri, with Pastor Eugene Keats officiating

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Rosehill Cemetery South Haven, Kansas.
