Berniece Wright

(December 5, 1926 – May 9, 2016)

Berniece was born on December 5, 1926 in Pesotum, Illinois. Berniece passed peacefully at Via Christi Nursing Center on Monday night May 9, 2016.

On October 6, 1942, Berniece married Jess Van Wright in Livingston, Alabama. Jess fought in Europe in WWII while Berniece stayed home. Jess and Berniece celebrated 69 years of marriage before Jess passed away December 24, 2011. Jess and Berniece were blessed with three children, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Ruth Self (Tommy), both deceased, and granddaughter Pamela Michal (Steve) of Garland, Texas; Julius Wright (Michelle) of Ponca City, Oklahoma and grandchildren Derek Wright (Brandi) of Austin, Texas, and Mindy Cancila (Tim) of Austin, Texas; and Jess Wright Jr. (Lisa) of Sylvan Grove, Kansas. Great grandchildren are Chas and Brynne Wright and Corinne and Carly Cancila. Also surviving are two bothers Thomas Altorfer of Peoria, Illinois and Ernest Walker of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and a niece Lorretta Gramse (Glenn) of Burnsville, Minnesota.

Berniece was preceded in death by her husband Jess Van Wright, brother Everett, sisters Elzora and Frances, and daughter Ruth Ellen.

Berniece was a devoted and loving wife and a wonderful Mother and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking for everyone, cake decorating, was an excellent seamstress, Sunday School Teacher, PTA secretary, Cub Scout Den Mother, professionally crocheted, Avon representative, cosmetologist, and genealogist. She loved flowers and worked year around in her flower beds. After retirement, Jess and Berniece moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma in 2002. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Fanchon Chapter #53 and volunteered at the Ponca City Hospital for 6 ½ years. A small family inurnment service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery (K.V.C.) in Winfield, Kansas. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory and the K.V.C Chaplain. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.
