John Wayne King
February 10, 1937 – May 9, 2016
John Wayne King, formerly of Ponca City passed away at his home with his family by his side in Prairieville, Texas. He was 79 years of age. John was born on February 10, 1937 in Pawnee, OK to Funston ”Bunk” King and Bertha Clark King.
Services will be held in the Ponca Cultural Tribal Center on Friday, May 13, 2016 following the Traditional noon Feast with Pastor Jimmy White officiating and Phil Smith assisting. Interment will follow in the Ponca Indian Cemetery in Ponca City. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
John grew up in Oklahoma and attended Chilocco School for a time and he graduated from Po High in 1955. John attended Haskell Institute. He learned the trade of Pipefitting in Los Angeles. He was a Journeyman pipefitter and member of the Local 709 union from Los Angeles, CA. John moved around, following where work was available eventually he landed in Texas and he met the Love of his life Benita Hunt and they were married May 1, 1985 in Dallas, TX. He enjoyed Square Dancing, watching Syfy and Western movies and his favorite movie was Independence Day and his favorite quote was ”Just A Minuet”. He was a former member of the Ponca Indian Baptist Church. He also attended the First United Methodist Church in Mabank, Texas where he oversaw and developed the Prayer Garden.
Survivors include: his wife Benita of the Home; 3 daughters: Bertha Elvina Leeper of Okmulgee, OK, Helen Patricia Jimenez and husband Ezequiel of Southgate, CA and LaCata Mann Brown and husband David of Cleburne, TX, 2 sons and 2 adopted sons: Charles Keith Pierce of Garland, TX and James Eric Pierce and wife Bri of Prairieville, TX, R. Alonzo and wife Debbie of Payne Springs, TX and Michael Pyron of Irving, TX brothers and adopted brothers: Philmore King of Oregon, Chester Haynes of OKC, OK and Robert King of Tulsa, OK3 sisters; Liz Loera, Nellie King and Laura Colbert all of Ponca City, OK numerous grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter: Doncella Sakiestewa, 2 sons: David Wayne King and John Kirk King, 6 brothers and 1 sister.
