Joyce Marie Haywood

(December 5, 1955 – January 27, 2016)

Joyce Marie Horinek Haywood passed this life January 27, 2016. Joyce was a loving mother and wife, as well as a loyal friend to many.

Joyce was born Dec. 5, 1955, in Ponca City to Robert and Katherine (Spoor) Horinek. Joyce grew up in Newkirk and attended St. Francis of Assisi grade school. Her grade school experience was one of the most special times in her life, as she met her best friend for life, Annette Popplewell. Joyce and Annette were best friends for 54 years.

Joyce graduated from Newkirk High School in 1974. Breaking barriers in her own special fashion, Joyce was the first female elected as Student Council president at Newkirk High. She was in band, choir, and was known for being an excelled baton twirler, frequently using blazing batons.

In 1974, she married Billy Kekahbah. A son was born of this marriage, Cameron. Cameron was Joyce’s little boobalah. Joyce was a very proud mother, traveling with Cameron to all of his piano competitions. Joyce and Cameron traveled together frequently, enjoying many places around the world.

In 1979, Joyce began a career with Conoco which lasted 33 years. Joyce was the first woman in Conoco worldwide to the enter the mechanical pool. Joyce worked in several areas in the plant, including the Grease Plant, West Plant and finishing her career as a reliability repairman in the South Plant. Joyce made many life-long friends while working there. After her retirement, she would frequently joke that her favorite thing at work was break and lunch time.

Joyce married the love of her in life in 2007, Scott. Their marriage consisted of daily rounds of golf with their friends at Wentz, as well as hosting game nights with their friends. They traveled to New York City in 2008 to see her beloved baseball team, the New York Yankees, play their last year in Yankee Stadium.

Joyce’s favorite hobby was playing golf. She also loved watching Yankee’s baseball, OU football and the Denver Broncos. She was always working on a jigsaw puzzle. Joyce was a friend of Bill W’s for over 25 years and appreciated the love and fellowship of all of Bill’s friends.

She was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Bobby. She is survived by her husband, Scott, her son Cameron and his fiancé, Jesse Tosca,of Ft. Worth, TX, her mother Katherine of Newkirk, step-children Jeanne Erickson and Thomas Tallchief as well as Heather and Nate Loe of Ponca City and Aaron and Alyssa Haywood of Liberty, MO, and her best friend Annette Popplewell of Denver. Siblings include Lynda Horinek of Tulsa, Beverly and Larry Ball of Waynoka, Bill Horinek of Newkirk and Warren Horinek of Cuero,TX. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all who loved her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been set up in her name through the Northern Oklahoma College Foundation. This scholarship will go to a female student in the Process Technology program.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 29, at 6:00 p.m. at Trout Funeral Home. Mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ponca City. Honorary pallbearers include the South Plant and West Plant of Conoco/Phillips 66.
