Joseph Ebert of Ponca City, Oklahoma passed away at Northwest Specialty Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma on July 31, 2015 at the age of 85 years.
Services are pending.Joseph “Joe” Merle Ebert Sr. of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday, July 31, 2015, in the Northwest Specialty Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma, at the age of 85 years.
Joseph “Joe” Merle Ebert Sr. was born on February 22, 1930, in Blackwell to Martin and Edna (Compton) Ebert. He grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell Public Schools and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1948 where he was honored as Maroon Spirit his senior year. He furthered his education by attending Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa receiving an associate’s degree in 1950. Following his education he entered the United States Army serving in Sapporo, Japan. After his honorable discharge he returned to Blackwell and married Geraldine Mae Wilkerson on November 7, 1952, in Wellington, Kansas, and they settled in Blackwell where he worked for the Blackwell Zinc Company. He worked there until 1974 when the plant closed. Following the closing of the smelter he began working as an operator for Conoco in Ponca City. On October 10, 1983, he married Wanda Self in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they made Blackwell their home. He retired from Conoco in 1992. He was a member of the Blackwell Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed traveling and fishing.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathi Dunham of Longview, Texas; three sons, Joe Ebert Jr. of Medford, Richard Ebert of Blackwell, and Jon Ebert of Gilroy, California; two step-daughters, Theresa Kocian of Houston, Texas, and Glenda Teel of Dallas, Texas; three step-sons, Joe Jones of Jacksonville, Florida, Mike Puett of Blackwell, and Jack Vickers of Missouri; a sister, Dee Dee Ryan of Wichita, Kansas; a brother, Martin Ebert of Kansas City, Missouri; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives; his parents; and two sisters.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 8th in the Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Koch of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his honor with the First Christian Church Funeral Dinner Fund in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
