Obituary for Opal Chambers

Opal Mae Chambers, formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, May 6, 2015, in Sumter, South Carolina, at the age of 101 years.
Opal Mae Chambers was born on November 8, 1913, in Covington, Indiana, to James Monroe and Francis Elizabeth (Swingle) Martin. She grew up in Covington and attended Covington Public Schools. Following the death of her mother, she returned to the home to care for her family. On December 6, 1933, she married George Calvin Chambers in Blackwell. In the 1950’s she began working as a dietician for the Blackwell General Hospital and worked there until 1968. She then worked for two years as a dietician for the Blackwell Nursing Home before her retirement. Her husband preceded her in death on May 30, 1999, and she continued living in Blackwell until moving to Sumter, South Carolina, to be near her daughter. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Rebekkah Lodge in Blackwell. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and cooking for large groups.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Vannoy of Sumter, South Carolina; a son, George Chambers of Blackwell; five grandchildren; and many great and great great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Sims and Mary Swopes; and four brothers, Haskel, Carl, Everett and Jack Martin.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 9th in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Cap McIlnay officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her honor with the First United Methodist Church in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
