Obituary for Joy Dyer

Joy Kathryne Dyer of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday evening, October 1, 2014, in the Galacia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 83 years.

Joy Kathryne Dyer was born on November 24, 1930, in Riviera, Texas, to John Herbert and Mary Ophelia (Rhodes) Walker. As a young girl she moved with her family to Konawa, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Konawa High School in 1946. She furthered her education by attending East Central University in Ada where she received a bachelor degree in education. Upon completion of college she moved to Blackwell where began teaching elementary school at Northside Elementary. She married Frank Vassar Dyer II on June 15, 1953, in Konawa, Oklahoma, and they settled at Ft. Hood, Texas, where he was stationed in the military. Following his discharge they returned to Blackwell and she served her family as a homemaker. In the early 1970’s she returned to the classroom at Blackwell Junior High School where she taught special education. She also attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva where she received a master’s degree in special education. She retired from Blackwell Public Schools in 1984. She was an active member of the First Christian Church and also held membership in P.E.O. and Ladies Bible Study Group. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, but her greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Frank Dyer of Blackwell; two sons, Frank Dyer III of Derby, Kansas, and Joel Dyer of Blackwell; four grandchildren, Cy Dyer, Tyler Dyer, Laura Blanchard and Kathryne Baier; and six great grandchildren, Hunter Dyer, Taylor Dyer, Jackson Dyer, Karsten Dyer, Ben Baier and Will Blanchard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Lou Clark; a son, Charlie Dyer; a brother, Herb Walker Jr.; and two sisters, Lenora Barnett and Mary Hobbs.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 6th in the First Christian Church in Blackwell with Rev. Jeff Koch officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Frank Dyer, Joel Dyer, Wes Childers, Wayne Whittington, Jack Hurst and JoDel Shepherd. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Bo Riseling, Charles White and the First Christian Church Elders.

A memorial has been established in her honor with the First Christian Church Youth Group in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74361.
