Obituary for Jeanette Lewis

Jeanette Irene Lewis of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Saturday, August 2, 2014, at her residence in Blackwell at the age of 75 years.

Jeanette Irene Lewis was born on June 24, 1939, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Chester and Frances Cheney. At the age of two she moved to Blackwell with her family. Her father, Chester, was killed in action in 1944 during World War II and her mother later married Edward C. Koppes in 1949 in Blackwell. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School. In 1955 she moved with her family to Longmont, Colorado, to be close to her Aunt Helen and Uncle Ray Neale. She attended Longmont High School graduating in June 1958. While in high school she worked at Valley Farm Dairy from 1955-1958. Following her education she married James E. Lewis on July 19, 1958, at Fort Carson, Colorado, and they moved to the Aberdeen proving ground in Aberdeen, Maryland. They also lived in Havre De Grace, Maryland, for only a short time before returning to Longmont while her husband finished his military education in Indian Head, Maryland. She joined Jim in January 1959 at Fort McLellan, Alabama, and lived close to Anniston, Alabama, until June of 1960. When her husband was discharged from the Army in June of 1960, they moved back to Longmont, Colorado. They lived in several places in the Longmont area, and then bought their first home In Longmont, Colorado. In August 1968, their family moved to the B. & B. RV Park, which they managed when the owners were away. In January 1985, they bought her Aunt Helen’s home in Denver and in June of that year, after having it remodeled, they moved in. In May 1988, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was treated with chemo and radiation therapy and was later diagnosed as cancer free. In May 1991 they returned to Longmont to be close to and help her mother and brother. In October 1997, Jim retired and they moved to Payette, Idaho, and in January 2000, they moved to Blackwell, along with her brother Chester L. Cheney Jr., to be close to the Cheney family.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Lewis of Blackwell; two daughters, Tina Walker and husband Tom of Canby, Oregon, and Rhonda Newell and husband Mike of Las Vegas, Nevada; two grandchildren, Brandon and Lindsay Walker of Salem, Oregon, and Meagan Walker of Dallas, Texas; three great grandchildren, Bayley, Donovan, and Micah; a brother, Chester L. Cheney Jr. of Blackwell; and many cousins and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her mother and step-father.

Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 8th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herb Berkley of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the Blackwell Cemetery.
