Obituary for Dorothy Tanner

Dorothy May Tanner of Newkirk, Oklahoma, died Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 82 years.

Dorothy May Tanner was born on January 30, 1932, in Blaine County, Oklahoma, to John Riley and Thelma J. (Erb) Huston. She grew up and attended Blackwell Public Schools and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1951. She married Virgil J. Tanner on July 27, 1952, in Blackwell and she served her family as a homemaker. In 1988 she began working at Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell and retired in 1995. She was a member of the Peckham Christian Church where she taught Sunday School for thirteen years. She also held membership in the Christian Women’s Fellowship where she served as president for four years and secretary for six years. Other memberships include Eastern Star and Fun and Fundamentals Home Demonstration Club. She also served as a 4-H leader for seventeen years. She enjoyed embroidery and her family.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil Tanner of Newkirk; a daughter, Valerie Ross of Stillwater; two sisters, Bessie Tanner of Blackwell and Patsy Dorl of Ponca City; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Victor and Johnnie Tanner; three brothers, William, Henry and Lloyd Huston; and three sisters, Rosa Rowe, Emma Nash and Elizabeth Huston.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 21st in the Newkirk Cemetery with Rev. Lee Mefford of the Peckham Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her honor to the Peckham Christian Church in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
