Ray L. Lessert, III ,better known as “Sonny Ray” to his friends and family, lost his short battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 20, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Ray was born in Ponca City on May 3, 1947, to Ray and Robyn Lessert, Jr. He spent his early years growing up in “Vet Village” in Stillwater, OK while his dad completed veterinary school. At the age of seven, his family returned to Ponca City. Living in Osage County, Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing and helping his grandpa on the family farm. He spent many hours helping his dad treat and care for animals. In his youth, Ray actively participated in wrestling, basketball, football, and baseball. He continued playing football, but his passion was for the game of baseball throughout his high school years. Ray was selected All State Catcher in 1965 and was offered two professional baseball contracts upon graduation from PCHS. Instead, he chose to attend Oklahoma State University on a full baseball scholarship. Ray married his soulmate, Pam Walker on August 29, 1969. Pam was not only his wife, but remained his best friend throughout their 44 years together. They were blessed with one daughter, Lori Beth, and two grandchildren, Jordan and Lanie. Ray worked at Continental Carbon Company in the quality control lab for 33 years, retiring in 2002. Ray had many interests and joys in life. He was a devoted family man. His greatest pleasure came from nurturing his grandchildren and celebrating their successes. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and spending time with his buddies. Ray was a proud member of the Osage tribe.
He is survived by his wife, Pam, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jason George; grandchildren, Jordan and Lanie; sisters, Mary Hargis and Carol Easky; sister-in-law, Sandra Davis; niece, Robyn Easky; nephew, Ted Davis; and numerous “Lessert Family” cousins.
