Obituary for Garland Pappan

Garland A. Pappan, resident of Ponca City, OK, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at his residence. He was 79.

The traditional noon feast will be held on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Ponca Indian Baptist Church with the funeral service following at 2:00 pm with Pastor Richard Pickup, a special friend of the family, from Jay, OK., and Pastor Doug Eagle, officiating. Burial will then follow at Ponca Indian Cemetery in Ponca City, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Garland was born on June 12, 1934 to Leland Pappan, Sr. and Bessie (Others) Pappan in White Eagle, OK. He was raised in Ponca City, OK. He was married to Donna Cries For Ribs on November 2, 1978 at Ponca Indian Methodist Church in White Eagle, OK. He worked for the Ponca Tribe as a foreman of Ceta programs, Ponca Tribal business committee, Chief of Police for the Ponca Tribe and other positions of his tribe. Garland was one the elders of Ponca Tribe, he will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

Garland enjoyed bowling, bingo, boating, fishing and playing at the casinos. He was an avid golfer. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. As a young man he loved to hunt.

He is survived by wife, best friend and soul mate Donna Pappan; four daughters, Jane Stello of Skiatook, OK; Linda Caballero; Rhonda Dixon; Georgina Simpson; four sons; Garland "Son" Pappan, Ray Hinman, Ray L. Hinman, all of Ponca City, OK. Damien Goodman, a grandson, who he raised as his son; two sisters, Lillian Eagle, Molly Eagle, two brothers, Thomas Pappan and Al Waters. Numerous nephews and nieces, 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren as he loved each one of them very much. He is also survived by a life long friend Jim Atkins.

Preceded in death by his parents, Leland Pappan, Sr. and Bessie Others Pappan, three brothers, Leland Pappan, Jr.; Amarbe Pappan and Levi Crawford; two sisters, one son, Teddy Yonker.

Casketbearers will be Damien Goodman, Garry Goodman, Daryl Scott, and Johnny Kemble

Honorary Casketbearers will be Solon Cries For Ribs, Roy Hinman, Lemuel Rhodd, Wesley Gains, Jay Goodman, John Mercer, Josh Pearman, Douglas Rhodd, Henry Rhodd, Kurt Pollack, Tim Sletto, Al Waters, and Sherman Warrior.
