Ponca City High School’s newly formed Mock Trial Team competed this week in the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Chappelle Cup Tournament. Mock Trial is a state and national competition where students take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses to present a case in court. The MLK Tournament is a scrimmage tournament, hosted by the Owasso Mock Trial teams, to allow other teams a chance to practice in the format of a tournament before the official Mock Trial Competition rounds begin.

Ponca City presented the plaintiff case in the morning round against the Stillwater “C” team. Team members Ryan Turnipseed and Matt Yonkers were named by Stillwater “Best Witness” and “Best Attorney” for the plaintiff, respectively. Ponca City presented the defendant case in the afternoon round against the Owasso Magic Shoes team. Team members Ryan Turnipseed and Matt Yonkers were named by Owasso “Best Attorney” and “Best Witness”, respectively.

The Ponca City team will compete in a qualifying match February 1, 2019 against Coweta and Victory Christian at the Tulsa County Courthouse. The team is coached by Zach Murray and attorney coach Assistant City Attorney John Andrew.
