IRS investigating church doing business in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – The Internal Revenue Service is investigating a church doing business in Oklahoma that is affiliated with televangelist Robert Tilton.
The Tulsa World reports that Word of Faith World Outreach Center Inc. filed a petition Monday to block a summons issued by the IRS for records held at a Tulsa bank.
Court documents say the church owed nearly $300,000 in payroll taxes to the IRS for 2014 and 2015. The church says it has fully paid what it owed the agency and that the information being sought by the IRS is no longer relevant to its investigation.
Tulsa-based attorney Charles Harrison filed the petition on behalf of the church. Harrison declined the newspaper's request for comment.
Tilton was a Dallas-based televangelist in the 1980s, and his ministry collapsed following allegations in 1991 of mail fraud.
