NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – It's summertime in Oklahoma, and that means it's hot.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of central and eastern Oklahoma through Thursday evening. An excessive heat warning has been issued until 8 p.m. Wednesday for the northeastern corner of the state, including Tulsa, Bartlesville and Claremore.

Forecasters say afternoon heat index values between 110 and 113 degrees will develop Wednesday afternoon. Heat index values around 110 degrees are expected through Thursday.

The weather service says exposure to prolonged periods of excessive heat can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends that persons who work outside should schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned places and those overcome by heat should be moved to a cooler location.
