3.4 magnitude earthquake rattles parts of northern Oklahoma
MEDFORD, Okla. (AP) – An earthquake has rattled an area of northern Oklahoma.
The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 9:54 a.m. Saturday in Grant County.
Geologists say the earthquake’s epicenter was about eight miles south-southeast of Medford in far northern Oklahoma. The USGS says the earthquake occurred at a depth of less than three miles.
No damage or injuries was immediately reported and geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0.
Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years, with many linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and natural gas operations.
Oklahoma regulators have directed oil and natural gas producers to close some disposal wells and to reduce the volume of wastewater that is injected into other wells.
